Americans are sick and tired of 'quick fix' proposals that do nothing to solve our energy crisis. We need leaders like you to adopt forward-looking policies that transition our country into a clean energy economy with more fuel-efficient vehicles, more convenient transportation choices, freedom from oil dependence, renewable energy production and the creation of millions of jobs in the clean energy industries we need.

Yet, while many Americans are struggling to find extra money to get to work or to the grocery store, some in Congress seem to be listening only to oil industry's demands to let them drill in environmentally sensitive areas. This will not reduce gas prices; it will only mean more record profits for oil companies. And it will just keep us dependent on the same oil habit that is emptying our wallets today and will result in irreversible damage to long-protected special coastal and wilderness areas.

We can take control of our future and our wallets by improving energy efficiency and utilizing renewable energy. In doing so, we can achieve energy independence, create new jobs, fight global warming, and jump-start our nation's economy without jeopardizing our environment.

I strongly urge you to support and pass the following measures to effectively address our energy crisis:

1) Provide immediate consumer relief for high energy prices - redirecting existing oil industry subsidies to American consumers will help us pay for our skyrocketing transportation expenses.

2) Put more efficient vehicles on the road - effectively implement last year's increase in fuel efficiency standards to achieve at least 35 miles per gallon (mpg) level by 2015 and aggressive further increases through 2020.

3) Pass clean energy incentives - passing tax incentives for renewables and energy efficiency will help deliver cleaner energy choices and create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

4) Require that America generates at least 20 percent of its electricity from clean, renewable sources by 2020.

5) Establish science-based limits on global warming pollution. To prevent the worst effects of global warming before it is too late, Congress must reduce total U.S. global warming emissions by at least 20% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 - the science-based reductions needed to protect future generations.

We have the technological know-how, resources and determination to succeed. But we need your leadership to make this important change. We urge you to act now to speed real solutions to America's dangerous dependence on polluting energy sources that impact and threatens our health, economy, security and planet.
